Supervision Statement (English)

I am Alexander Kilpatrick, Director of the Language, Cognition, and Computation Lab at the University of Aizu. This page outlines my approach to supervising graduate theses and what students can expect when working with me.

Approach to Supervision

I believe that a large part of the learning process is independent thought and study, so I try not to make the big decisions. I encourage students to develop their own ideas and drive their research forward, while I provide guidance on direction, methodology, and academic rigour.

Availability

I make a point of being highly available to my students. I respond to emails promptly and keep my calendar open for meetings. My lab meets every Wednesday, and I am always present during periods 5 & 6 (13:20–15:00) if you have questions or need feedback.

Expectations

I expect my students to be ambitious. I expect them to do real science: discovering new things and explaining those things to the world. Students should actively explore dissemination opportunities, including both domestic and international conferences and publications.

Authorship and Publishing

It is my firm belief that named authors on a paper must have made a significant intellectual contribution, and the determination of that contribution should be made by the first author. In other words, you are not required to put my name on your research. I will offer my name only when my input has substantially shaped the work, and the decision rests with the student as first author.

私は会津大学の「Language, Cognition, and Computation Lab（言語・認知・計算研究室）」のディレクターを務めるアレクサンダー・キルパトリックです。このページでは、大学院生の論文指導における私の方針と、研究室での過ごし方について説明します。

指導のスタンス

学習過程においては、主体的な思考と自主的な学びが大きな部分を占めると考えています。そのため、あまり細かく手を出しすぎないようにしています。研究の方向性や方法論、学術的な厳密さについては助言しますが、学生自身が自分のアイデアを育て、研究を前に進めることを重視します。

連絡と面談について

学生からの質問や相談にはできるかぎり早く対応するよう心がけており、メールには迅速に返信し、カレンダーもオープンにしています。研究室のミーティングは毎週水曜日に行っており、5・6限（13:20～15:00）には必ず在室していますので、質問やフィードバックが必要なときはいつでも声をかけてください。

学生に期待すること

学生には野心を持ってほしいと思っています。本当の意味での科学、つまり新しいことを発見し、それを世界に発信することを期待します。国内・国際学会での発表や論文投稿など、成果を広く発信する機会を積極的に探る姿勢を求めます。

論文著者と出版

論文の著者として名前を連ねるには、その研究に顕著な知的貢献をしたことが必要であり、誰が著者に値するかは第一著者が決めるべきだというのが私の確固たる信念です。つまり、私の名前をあなたの論文に必ず入れる必要はまったくありません。私の助言が研究の本質を大きく形作った場合にのみ、私の名前を加えることを提案しますが、その判断は第一著者である学生に委ねられます。
